Steel table and stool bases
Mild steel bases made in batches for a furniture client: faceted, cross-braced and cube forms, all built to repeat.
Batch work is a different discipline to one-off fabrication. Every frame has to match every other frame, because they end up in the same room under the same tops.
That means jigging the job rather than measuring each piece, and it means controlling heat. Steel moves as you weld it, so the order the joints are run in decides whether the finished frame sits flat or rocks.
The faceted and cross-braced bases were the interesting ones. Neither has a square reference to work from, so the angles are cut and held rather than marked off an edge, and there is nowhere to hide a joint that is a degree out.
Every weld was ground back, so the frames went out clean and ready for finishing.
